Description

Positions for Substitute Special Education Bus Aides have been declared open in the Weber School District transportation department. This is an on-call position for up to 3 hours per day, 9 months per year. Applicants may apply at wsd.tedk12.com/hire.

 

Purpose Statement

The job of Bus Aide was established for the purpose/s of assisting students while they are being transported to and from school and providing assistance with students' health care.

Essential Functions

  • Assesses potential emergencies to take appropriate action to protect the well-being of passengers.
  • Assists special education students in providing for special needs during transport, safe loading and unloading from buses, including emergencies, and regular transport. (e.g., calming them down, watching for signs of seizures, cleaning students, redressing students, tying shoes, etc.) 
  • Climbs and descends bus stairs 3 Times in 30 seconds to assist students.
  • Drags a 125-pound object on the ground 50 feet within 30 seconds to assist a student in a possible emergency.
  • Instruct special education students and other passengers to enforce rules and regulations and maintain safety.
  • Kneels down and properly secures a wheelchair to the school bus, then returns to a standing position within 60 seconds to assist students.
  • Monitors students to prevent distractions to the driver or injury to themselves or others. (e.g., unruly, disruptive, spitting, hitting, abusive language, seizures, etc.) 
  • Picks up and carries a 50-pound object 35 ft within 20 seconds from seat height (16 inches) to assist students.
  • Reports observations and incidents to communicate information to appropriate personnel. (e.g., discipline, accidents, inappropriate social behavior, etc.) 
  • Secures students and equipment with restraints and tie-downs to ensure students' safety and welfare. (e.g., wheelchairs, seat belts, etc.) 

Other Functions

  • Assists other personnel as required to support them in completing their work activities.

 

Ability

 

Specific ability-based competencies required to perform the job functions satisfactorily include: communicating with diverse groups, maintaining confidentiality, working as part of a team, and working with constant interruptions.

Working under direct supervision using standardized routines, providing information and advising others, and operating within a defined budget. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.


Working Environment


The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, frequent climbing and balancing, frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 5% sitting, 75% walking, and 20% standing. The position is performed under minimal temperature variations and conditions with some exposure to the risk of injury and illness.


Experience

 

Job-related experience is desired.


Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Required Testing
  • Physical Performance Assessment
  • Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance

 

 

Substitutes who terminate their services with Weber School District are requested to submit a resignation notice to Human Resources via Employee Online. If written resignation is not received and a substitute is inactive for 365 days, they will be terminated as a substitute.
 
The employee may re-apply the following school year if removed from the substitute pool due to inactivity. Rehiring will be based on Weber School District's hiring needs.
