Title: Assessment and School Improvement Data Engineer

Calendar/Contract: 250 Days

Job Summary

 

Reporting to the Director of Assessment, School Improvement & Research, the Data Analyst is a key member of the team who will support in the development and maintenance of the district data dashboard and school data dashboards.  The facilitator plays a critical role in supporting the district by collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data to inform strategic decision-making and improve student outcomes. This position will work closely with various departments and stakeholders to provide insightful reports, and visualizations, based on data related to student achievement, attendance, demographics, and other key performance indicators. The ideal candidate possesses strong analytical skills, a passion for education, and the ability to translate complex data into actionable insights.

 

Desired Education and Training for Essential Functions:

• Master's degree preferred in Data & Statistics, Technology, or related field
• Experience in data analysis, preferably in an educational setting
• Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools, preferably Tableau and Looker Studio
• Strong understanding of statistical concepts and methods
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Strong communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.  
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office & Google
• Knowledge of educational data and reporting requirements.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Essential Functions:

 

• Data Collection and Management:

 

• Gather and compile data from the student information systems (SIS) and assessment platforms.
• Gather and compile data from assessment management databases including IncidentIQ, active directory, and Google Admin.
• Utilize Google BigQuery and Oracle SQL Developer to query and transform large datasets for district-wide analysis. 
• Develop automated data workflows to provide reliable, "ready-to-use" datasets that ensure data consistency across district platforms and reports. 
• Ensure data accuracy, integrity, and consistency through data validation and cleaning processes, including the development of automated workflows to streamline data preparation. 
• Maintain and update databases and data repositories.
• Develop and implement data collection procedures and protocols.

 

• Data Analysis and Reporting:

 

• Conduct statistical analysis and data mining to identify trends, patterns, and correlations.
• Develop and generate regular and ad-hoc reports and dashboards to visualize key performance indicators.
• Analyze student achievement data, attendance records, demographic information, and other relevant data sets.
• Prepare graphics and reports for various departments to visualize key performance indicators.
• Utilize tools like SQL, Python, R, or statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS) to perform data analysis.
• Use Tableau, Looker Studio, and other visualization tools to represent data in a meaningful and engaging way. 
• Design and develop interactive dashboards based on stakeholder feedback and specific departmental needs to ensure data is accessible and actionable.

 

• Dashboard Architecture & Administration:

 

• Manage the district’s Tableau Cloud site, including user provisioning, group management, and site-wide permissions.
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting for dashboard functionality, data connectivity, and user access to ensure consistent data availability.
• Serve as the primary resource for platform-related inquiries, resolving end-user challenges and gathering stakeholder feedback to drive continuous dashboard improvement.
• Design and maintain data sources and automated extract refreshes to ensure dashboard uptime and data readiness.
• Monitor and optimize dashboard performance and load times to ensure a seamless end-user experience.
• Analyze dashboard usage metrics to identify high-impact resources and retire or update underutilized visualizations.
• Implement and audit Row-Level Security (RLS) to ensure data privacy and FERPA compliance across all shared visualizations.
• Embed interactive dashboards into district websites to increase data transparency for internal and external stakeholders.

 

• Data Interpretation:

 

• Interpret data findings and provide actionable insights to inform administrative and instructional decision-making.
• Assist in the development and evaluation of district-wide initiatives and programs using evidence-based analysis.
• Support the district in meeting state and federal reporting requirements.
• Develop a deep understanding of the educational context to ensure data interpretations account for the unique cycles and challenges of the K-12 environment.
• Translate complex information into clear, focused narratives that align data findings with district goals and student success metrics.

 

• Collaboration and Communication:

 

• Work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, and other staff to understand data needs and provide support.
• Collaborate with technical engineers to understand and create automated data flow from large district databases.
• Communicate complex data findings in a clear and concise manner to non-technical audiences.
• Participate in professional development activities to stay current with data analysis best practices and educational trends.
• Facilitate professional development and training sessions on dashboard usage and data literacy for various departments and roles.
• Promote the practical application of data insights to support district-wide instructional and operational improvements. 
• Partner with the state data and statistics team to align local data practices with state-level methodologies and provide feedback on state-provided dashboards and resources. 

 

• Other Duties:

 

• Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
• Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

• Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.

Working Environment

• Work is primarily performed in an office setting within a school district administrative building, with occasional travel to school sites and district facilities.
• Position requires extensive use of computers, data systems, and related technology for prolonged periods.
• Frequent interaction with district administrators, school leaders, teachers, support staff, and external vendors or agencies.
• May participate in meetings, trainings, presentations, and collaborative planning sessions both in person and virtually.
• Work may involve managing multiple projects simultaneously and responding to time-sensitive deadlines associated with assessment cycles, state reporting requirements, accountability measures, and school improvement initiatives.
• A professional, collaborative, and service-oriented approach is required to support district and school stakeholders.

 

Physical Demands

• Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer and analyzing data.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers for keyboarding, data entry, and operation of standard office equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and through virtual meeting platforms.
• Ability to read, interpret, and prepare detailed reports, spreadsheets, dashboards, and data visualizations.
• Occasionally required to stand, walk, bend, reach, or lift and carry office materials, equipment, or documents weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Visual acuity sufficient to review data, reports, and computer screens accurately.
• Ability to travel between district locations as needed to provide support, training, and consultation services.
